The Health Benefits of Fish Oil Explained

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Fish oil is a proven food product for fighting disease and maintaining general good health. Fish oil is obtained from various species of fish such as mackerel, herring, sardines, lake trout, etc. Fish oil is safe for consumption by all age-groups; unlike dietary fish, which may be contaminated by metals such as mercury.

Fish oil is an important source of Omega 3 fatty acids; eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The Omega 3 found in fish oil is more beneficial than other forms of Omega 3 that are found in walnuts, flaxseeds, etc.

Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil have numerous clinically proven health benefits. Fish oil has long been considered as brain food and its regular consumption enhances memory and develops concentration. Studies carried out in different countries such as the U.K and Australia have shown the positive effects of fish oil on the learning skills of toddlers. Children affected by ADD/ADHD and dyslexia benefit from fish oil, their learning, grasping, and reading skills improve appreciably. In fact, if expecting mothers partake of fish oil, the children born have an edge over their compatriots in kindergarten. DHA in fish oil boosts visual acuity in children.

Fish oil is also considered to be beneficial in treating and preventing various forms of cancer. Studies with volunteer groups show that those who consumed fish oil were less susceptible to sunburn and the harmful effects of UV rays. This could have implications in the prevention of skin cancer. Research also shows that the combination of propofil, which is an anesthetic, with fish oil can lead to the destruction of cancer cells. This opens up the possibility of developing either an ointment or a patch for treating tumors. Fish oil has also been found to be useful in the treatment of the Human Papilloma Virus, which is a common STD that leads to cervical cancer in women.

Fish oil has always been considered good for the eyes; recent studies have shown that the Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil offer protection against age-related macular degeneration, which is one of the foremost causes of age-related blindness, and dry-eye syndrome in which the lachrymal glands do not function properly and the cornea can get scarred.

A recent study conducted in Denmark has found that fish oil consumption by diabetics lowered the content of triacylglycerol, (TAG) in the blood. TAG is a fatty substance linked to heart disease. Obese individuals who suffer from hypertension, insulin resistance, and high blood triglycerides can lose weight more effectively if they follow a regimen of exercise combined with regular intake of fish oil. This is because the Omega 3 fatty acids enhance the fuel-burning capacities of the cells. A study conducted in Japan found that Statins, which is drug used to lower cholesterol levels, was more useful when used in conjunction with fish oil.

Fish oil serves as a remedy for ulcerative colitis, which is an ailment of the digestive tract, characterized inflammatory pseudopolyps. Fish oil taken in conjunction with antioxidants and fiber-rich foods, helps control this ailment.

Understanding Tumescent Liposuction

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Tumescent liposuction is done using a local aesthetic. A large volume of saline solution containing the aesthetic and a drug called “Epinephrine” is injected directly into the areas where there are excessive fatty deposits. Epinephrine is important in the surgical process because it shrinks capillaries and minimizes blood loss. Minor sedation may be required for those who feel a little nervous about the surgery; however the patient is usually completely conscious during the surgery.

Benefits of Having Tumescent Liposuction

• Fewer skin irregularities

• Less bleeding

• Reduced bruising

• Faster recovery

Procedure

A small incision is made in the skin, allowing the tube connected to a vacuum type machine to suck up the fat. The tumescent method uses smaller cannulae than that of any other type of liposuction which results in less bruising or bleeding. An elastic compression garment is worn to help the skin contract and heal. This helps to sculpt the bulging areas of the skin and help to achieve more attractive contours.

There are risks associated with having any type of surgery. Tumescent liposuction is a very safe procedure with very few side effects. If the following types of side effects occur they are usually easily corrected.

• Skin irregularity

• Lumpiness

• Dimpling

• Loose skin

• Infections

Tumescent Liposuction Recovery

Recovery time varies dramatically from person to person. Many patients are able to walk out of the office without assistance and get back to a regular routine within a few days.
It takes almost six weeks for any scar to begin to soften and a full year to be complete.

A patient may feel a little numbness in the area that has been treated because the local anaesthesia remains in the tissue for twenty-four hours or more after surgery.

Most patients will usually only experience minor discomfort after the numbness wears off.

Most patients are generally alert and able to function; they do not experience nausea and grogginess associated with general anaesthesia.

The sooner a patient can begin to move around, the faster the healing progresses.

Physical exercise is not recommended until at least a week after having the procedure.

The South Beach Diet

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Among the most popular forms of dieting is the South Beach diet, developed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston of Miami, Florida.

The South Beach diet is always confused with Atkins Diet, which is a low-carbohydrate diet. The South Beach diet highlights the consumption of “good carbohydrates” (high in fiber) and low in glycemic index. The South Beach diet was developed for patients with heart problems to lose weight without risking ketosis. The weight loss was a side effect which turned out to be beneficial and this encouraged many people to try South Beach diet.

According to the South Beach diet theory, highly processed carbohydrates are quickly digested which makes insulin level to shoot up. Once the carbohydrates are all used up, your high insulin level makes you crave more for carb-filled foods.

The South Beach diet is based on the observation that Americans are carb crazy, which is also the reason for the induction phase. In the first two weeks, dieters attempt to eliminate bad carb such as grains or fruits. After this phase, grain-based foods and fruits are returned to the diet with the concentration on foods with low glycemic index.

The South Beach diet also emphasizes the difference between good and bad carbohydrates, and good and bad fats. Good carbohydrates have low glycemic index which means that they are slowly digested and absorbed. The South Beach diet bans unhealthy fats such as saturated fat.

Finally, the South Beach diet stresses a permanent change in one’s way of eating. The South Beach diet suggests whole grains along with large amounts of vegetables, with sufficient amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, plus Omega-3 oils. The South Beach diet discourages eating of overly refined foods such as flour and sugar.

According to experts, the South Beach diet met the criteria of healthy diet which is a good thing. The bad thing is the induction phase wherein dieters lose weight due to loss of water. Losing a large amount of water can disturb one’s electrolyte so if you’re following the South Beach diet, it would be better if you work closely with a doctor.

According to Dr. Agatston, South Beach diet is neither a low carb nor low fat diet but the restrictions placed in the induction phase cut big time the carbohydrate and fat intake of dieters. The good thing about the South Beach diet is that it teaches people on the right foods to eat to cut the risk of heart problems and high cholesterol as well as help them lose weight. The South Beach diet is a long, tedious journey towards perhaps a drop dead gorgeous body. But more than phases of losing weight, the South Beach diet is a way of life.

Warning Signs – Ignore at your own Risk

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Neil Shulman, MD, has written a book – Your Body’s Red Light Warning Signals. In it he lists hundreds of medical symptoms that could mean the difference between life, death and a serious disability. Shulman says that too many people are dying because they are not aware that these symptoms can be a tip off to a very serious problem. The symptoms that you should be looking for are:

1) Unexplained weight loss and/or loss of appetite;
2) Slurred speech, paralysis, weakness, tingling, burning pains, numbness, and confusion are signs of a stroke, and you should get to an appropriate emergency center immediately.
3) Black, tarry stools. This may indicate some type of internal bleeding.
4) A headache accompanied by a stiff neck and fever is an indicator of a serious infection called meningitis.
5) A sudden, agonizing headache, more severe than any you have felt before, could mean you are bleeding in the brain. Go to an emergency room immediately.
6) A. For women: Vaginal bleeding after menopause is a waning sign of possible cancer.
B. For men: A lump in your testicle with or without a small lump in the groin could be serious. Testicular cancer is more commonly found in testicles that did not naturally descend from the abdomen to the scrotum.
All of the above are things that we should be mindful of and even if we think there is a problem – go to the doctor and get it checked out.
REMEMBER – YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE – TAKE CHARGE TODAY!!

Mad Cow, Avian Flu: Cure & Prevention

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Offered here is distilled research and commentary presented by reputable third parties on mad cow, avian flu, hoof & mouth, MS, HIV/AIDS and others. The third parties presented here are either researchers with no product to sell, or established, reputable journalistic reports, including one from National Public Radio (NPR).

For mad cow, a researcher who recently presented his findings at the Geneva Health Conference and was interviewed in the title: Micro Eco-Farming, says to put kelp in the animal’s daily feed, and perhaps on their pastures. This supplies the daily 72+ trace minerals in perfectly balanced form, a form mammals (including humans) were created to receive daily, and no longer get, even with organic farming, (although organic usually comes closer, and sometimes supplies them unknowingly). For detailed scientific and historical commentary on this, see http://www.truehealth.org/madcow3.html

Hoof and mouth: For how this same method has been shown to work with hoof & mouth disease, see information from the same researcher: http://www.truehealth.org/madcow3.html

Avian flu for poultry: The researcher above who has authored www.truehealth.org suggests fishmeal for chickens, a gram a day per pound of chicken. He comments that this should prevent the virus in its original form, and we’ll have to see what happens with the mutated virus, whether it runs its course, a natural immunity develops, or if it can also be cured this way.

NPR recently reported on how the Avian flu mutation started in unhealthy factory farming conditions. There are further reports by Small Farm Journal that multinational corporations that stand to make great profits are, during this time of panic, trying to enforce a control system in which animal owners will be forced, by law, to purchase animal control microchip mechanisms made by their company, with high fines for those who don’t comply, and instant euthanasia of their animals upon any suspicion regardless if whether the animals are proven to be immune to these diseases.

Be alert to the typical human panic reaction to over control each time there is a new outbreak, putting more power in the hands of a few who make profits from their control suggestions. Some are trying to suggest all birds be kept perpetually inside buildings in the future to prevent avian flu. If one virus mutated in these conditions, it won’t be the last. Avoidance of the natural world would also not allow any natural immunity to be created.

Avian flu for humans: Ode Magazine simply states to keep your body’s immune system strong, just as you would for any flu (vitamin C, zinc, elderberry, etc.). Even contagious bronchitis still kills weakened people, so just keep your immunity strong. www.truehealth.org further addresses viruses by suggesting the same remedy as that for mad cow and hoof & mouth, begin to replenish your body’s trace elements (72+, not just 10 or 20). So far, the easiest way is with daily foods from the sea. Supplements come close but don’t seem to cover the entire spectrum yet (even if they claim to), though there is research into achieving full spectrum from the sea for humans. HIV/AIDS and MS are further discussed on this site.

Individuals are responsible for their own choices, for checking into the quality of any product, growing method or food source they choose to take part in or consume or have their animals consume, as well as for reading the finer details on the above suggestions and commentary (how much, for how long, etc.), and for first checking with a trained health care professional.

The Lighter And Darker Side Of Skin Care

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Are You In Need Of Vitamin D?

Applying sun screen and keeping away from the sun’s harmful rays may cause your body to need Vitamin D. People with dark skin synthesize less vitamin D on exposure to sunlight much less than those with lighter skin. Because Vitamin D plays an important role in skin cell metabolism and growth, it may be helpful in treating the itching and flaking associated with many skin ailments.

Vitamin D is found naturally in very few foods. Foods containing Vitamin D include canned pink salmon, mackerel, & sardines, cow’s milk, fortified with vitamin D, orange juice, cereal fortified with vitamin D, egg yolks (from hens that have been fed vitamin D.)

While just 10 to 15 minutes in the summer sun a few days a week supplies adequate amounts of vitamin D, those who can’t get out in the sun may need a supplement. Choose a quality Vitamin D or Vitamin A & D in supplement form.

Are You Worried About Wrinkles?

Before trying a surgical face lift – try facial acupuncture. After just one treatment you will notice that your wrinkles have softened your eye under areas as well as the eyelids are firmer, and your pores are tighter. Compare the cost of treatment ranging from $90 to $350 a treatment for facial acupuncture with a surgical face lift ranging from $4,500 up to $15,000.

Do You Use A Natural Quality Skin Cream?

Use a good quality skin cream nightly to keep your skin soft and subtle while sleeping. Check the label and make sure all ingredients are processed without the use of synthetic preservatives or fragrances.

Do You Have Oily Skin?

Oily skin can be tricky. Do not scrub or overdue washing; this can make the skin even oilier. Cleanse your skin simply with a cotton cloth or your fingertips. Use products containing apple juice, black cherry juice, cucumber, dandelion leaf, lemon juice, licorice root and organic lavender. Supplementing with vitamins A, B and C are all good for the skin, especially oily skin.

Are You Plagued By Dry Skin?

To ease dry skin wash twice a day with a quality water-based botanical cleaner. The ingredients should include aloe vera, calendula, green tea, orange peal oil, rose or witch hazel.

Why Not Try DMAE For Your Hair And Skin?

Supplement with DMAE, about 100 mg a day, and you will find your skin will be firmer and less likely to tear, bleed, or develop scrapes and scabs. It will also strengthen your hair follicles.

Quality Water Is Best For Good Skin Care.

Keeping your skin hydrated by drinking 4/8 glasses of quality water daily is the best ticket to plump, firmer more youthful skin. Drink good quality bottled water, distilled being the best.

As with any vitamin or supplement, please consult your doctor before taking. Author Beverly Terhune speaks from 35 years of living with Rheumatoid Arthritis and shares her experience, strength & hope on how to lead a healthy, substance-free life.
