Personal Space: Life After Lap-Band Surgery

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Have I become invisible or are people just aiming right at me? It seems to me that in a crowd these days, whether at the grocery store or 5th Avenue in New York City, people will walk right into me if I don’t step out of the way. Or they stand so close to me I have to step backward in order to breathe.

Now, I have never felt that I have such a small area of personal space. A busy street or mall never bothered me. I could walk through the crowd at a museum or a concert without being trampled. Only since losing 110 pounds have I begun to notice how the shrinking personal space has begun to bother me.

When I weighed 277 pounds I always felt emotionally invisible; that no one truly saw me or knew I was there. But while I felt emotionally invisible, I knew I was always physically there. I didn’t get bumped into, people didn’t stand so close to me that I felt the need to step away in order to maintain personal space. In the mall or on a San Francisco street, people gave me a wide berth. Bus passengers would hesitate before sitting down next to me judging just how much space they would have for their ride home.

When a thin person sees a fat person, regardless if the fat person is attractive or not, a bit of uneasiness runs through the thin person; “If I wasn’t working out everyday that could be me.” “Thank goodness I don’t look like that.” “Ok, salad again for lunch.”

According to ABC News, the American public spends $33 billion on the ever elusive quest for non-fatness. The billions are spent on fat-free products, exercise equipment, gym memberships, and weight loss programs. Spent on anything and everything not to become that fat person they see on the bus.
So it is no surprise that when the one thing they work so hard to avoid is right in front of them they steer clear of it.

As a newly thin person I see the overweight person. I wish I could stop them and tell them how I did it– that I was once overweight and have broken free.

But I can’t. So instead I make eye contact. I smile. I sit next to them on the bus without hesitation.

But it is a different life I am in now. Today I feel like I am physically invisible when walking those crowded streets, and that people are going to literally walk right into me if I don’t step out of the way. I feel like they no longer see me; or maybe they are just no longer ill at ease. Maybe I am now like everyone else and I need to get the hell out of the way if I don’t want to get run over.

Migraines Are The Great Equalizers

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Migraine headaches must be one of the great equalizers that tell you in no uncertain terms to stop what ever you are doing now!

Anyone who has suffered from this kind of headache will be able to relate to this article, it is something like childbirth; it’s not something you can fully appreciate unless you have experienced it.

I must have been about eleven or twelve years old when I had my first one. I was at a bus stop in the middle of a snow blizzard waiting for the school bus to arrive when it first hit me. It was probably the glare off the snow that triggered it and it wasn’t until years later that I could put a name to the experience. My headaches were classic and during these episodes there was only one thing that I really wanted more than life itself and that was to die.

I went through self analysis and even kept a log of the headaches for years and I could find no pattern, they just simply happened at any time and any place. Whatever triggered the migraines seemed to be inconsistent. Light and hunger was a couple of them but I am sure it was in combination with other things.

As I grew older they slowed down for awhile and at one point I never had one for almost a year and I thought I had it licked. Lately they are coming back with more frequency. I lead a fairly stress free life and meditate daily. The headaches happen during my waking hours and in my sleep and as with all physical ailments there is a root thought that supports it that I haven’t found it.

I befriended the idea that maybe people who had migraines were special and that new awareness would come from the experience, I thought it may have been God’s way of communicating and my brain was just being overloaded. I looked for patterns in the swirling lights that flooded my inner and outer vision. I sat quietly in the dark and waited for messages or meaning, nothing happened except for the nausea and pain.

Until a few years ago there was only one thing that was inevitable, I had to stop what ever I was doing and lay down for an hour in the dark. I considered myself one of the lucky ones that were not de-habilitated for days or had to go to the hospital for shots. I got angry, resentful and just plain pissed off when they happened; I tried to look for the silver lining and found none, so I gave into them when they happened.

A few years ago I changed my thoughts about how I would react to the headaches when they occurred. I decided that I would carry on with my life and ignore them as much as possible and in doing so I found some measure of success. It may well be because over fourty years have elapsed since my first one, the blurry lasts about half an hour, and I no longer get the nausea. My headaches are not as piercing, they still last for a day or so but are very mild and I seldom take any pain relievers for them.

I have changed my thoughts about the events when they happen and I try not to let it interfere too much with my routine. I have turned an undesirable event into something more positive. I used the headaches as a warning sign; an amber light that says slow down. This awareness is a major change from the red light that stopped everything a few years ago. The lethargy that follows for the next two days does not allow me to get back into full swing immediately and the shift into high gear is gradual. There is nothing that can not wait, I keep going even during the blurry period without medication, but I do it on my time and on my terms.

I have learned to give up on the idea that everything has to be done now.

I am generally in good health and seldom get sick and never get into serious accidents. The migraines are not something that I want to have consciously I am not the masochistical, but they have perhaps served me well in slowing me down and avoiding other more serious problems. I am highly motivated to be productive at all times and even at rest will read a book or do something fruitful.

I do not look forward to these headaches but I do not try to avoid them, and I use the opportunity to re-evaluate my circumstances at the time.

I had another migraine yesterday morning while I was looking forward to getting up early, and writing this article, albeit not about migraines. I had to get my web site ready to upload later in the evening; this routine takes me half a day to accomplish. The first symptoms were clearly in front of me as soon as the monitor on my computer had warmed up. I did not get this article finished until today and my site was not uploaded last night; it will be twenty four hours late. The day was spent wandering around doing very mundane things that was my usual routine on a Sunday.

I know that all things happen for a reason, I do not believe in coincidence or chance. I didn’t have a topic when I woke up yesterday and this article needed to be printed. I believe that someone somewhere is receiving help from my experience. We are all connected and it was appropriate and timely for this headache, for my benefit and that of another.

Life always leaves signs for us as we walk our walk. Most of the time we do not see them or we ignore them and some of us have to be hit of the head pretty hard in order for the message to get through.

I am reminded that we are spiritual beings first and the body is just an extension of that mind. We are not victims of circumstance, we are creating them. Freud said that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but I know it’s not in your mouth by accident. All things have purpose; it is how we experience these things in our own unique way that determines whether we consider them good or bad.

I have moved away from the “good thing” and “the bad thing” and have replaced them with “what works” and “what does not work” for me. Obviously the migraines are working for me even though I am not satisfied that this is all there is to it. I have chosen to use them to my advantage and see them as a sign to slow down.

Life has no purpose other than the purpose you give it. Signs may be just signs, but they have purpose. It is the individual that decides what that purpose is on a conscious level. Signs are physical manifestations of something that is going on inside; a thought process. For me the migraine experience has been a painful equalizer.

Congenital Heart Disease - Open Heart Surgery For Babies and Toddlers

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

On 1 December 2002 I had little exposure to heart disease however only 10 days later was at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) bedside of our newborn baby who required lifesaving open heart surgery.

Whilst many diseases are extremely well known, the following are little known facts:
• Heart defects are present in 1 in 100 babies
• Heart disease in children is the leading cause of childhood death in Australia accounting for 30% of all child deaths.
• Nearly twice as many children die of congenital heart disease compared to all childhood cancers
• In 80% of cases the cause is largely unknown.

The amazing thing is how far medicine and surgery has progressed to allow a second chance for many babies like ours that only 20 years ago would not have survived.

Whilst there is a myriad of different abnormalities that can occur, our newborn baby required reconstruction for a coarctation of the aortic arch, reconstruction of both the aortic and mitral valves and closing of a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).

The mitral and aortic valves were narrow and the anatomy of the valves was somewhat different to what they should have been. Whilst the aortic valve reconstruction was quite successful, the mitral valve is far more complex and following surgery the gradient across the valve was still high thus leaving our baby with mitral valve stenosis (narrowing of the valve).

This particular surgery took 5.5 hours and the stakes were high - a one in ten or 10% chance that our son would not survive.

Following surgery the next 24 hours is seen as a vital period where if problems are going to be encountered, this is likely to be the period. This is not to say that post 24 hours means everything is fine and dandy. Recovery in our case was slow with a further ten days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for weaning off the ventilator which assists and at times initiates breathing, as well as waiting for the heart to ’settle’ so that pacemakers and other medications are no longer necessary.

Much of the recovery period is “trial and error” or more like careful monitoring and adjustment as necessary. For example following heart surgery patients are fluid restricted to assist the work the heart has to do thus attempting to prevent the build up of fluids leading to heart failure. On the other side of this coin however is that a patient can then end up dehydrated.

It is hard to know whether advance knowledge of a heart condition in an unborn baby would be better than the shock we experienced with diagnosis two days after the birth of our child. Either way it is an enormously stressful process that in our case did not and has not ended with the surgery following birth. In many instances further surgery is required, for us another reconstruction of the mitral valve at two years of age and further surgery is expected with ultimate replacement of the mitral valve with an artificial valve.

The unknown throughout our process and in many cases is when the next surgery will be required. For these cases, families of babies, toddlers and children go from day to day, week to week, month to month, and sometimes year to year before the next call to surgery comes.

For all those in a similar situation our thoughts and prayers go out to you. For anyone interested, the amazing story in relation to the ongoing saga with our son can be found at http://www.beatinghearts4kids.blogspot.com .

Mesothelioma information

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Mesothelioma in itself is one of the deadliest diseases ever to have been discovered by mankind. Medically, Mesothelioma as a word itself means a tumor that is more likely to transform in a fast proliferating cancer which affects the mesothelial cells of an organ, which form the protective thin covering over the organs like heart, lungs and abdomen.

Whatever is the verbal definition given out to this deadly disease, but those can never for sure weigh the deadliness of this fatal disease. It is an absolutely fatal disease which has taken many a people into its deadly grip. The maximum period of survival after the disease has been diagnosed, has come to the most of a year or two. It is worse form of cancer which is not curable. However, recent studies have suggested that if the disease can be diagnosed at a very early stage then the life of the individual who gets affected by this deadly disease, can be stretched till at the most of 5 years. The treatment of this disease is very expensive but the treatment doesn’t assure life but a few more days, to procure the huge lump-sum required for the treatment, people also file lawsuits to cover the huge incurring expenses for the treatment.

The main cause of mesothelioma has been detected as to the prolonged exposure to asbestos. Most of the patients that have been diagnosed with the disease, had acquired the disease cause of prolonged exposure to asbestos. The statistics of the mesothelioma patients has revealed the connection between the asbestos and the dangerous cancer syndrome.

And usually this disease is found to affect people and workers who work in industries. Usually, industries use asbestos as an imperative input for carrying on different processes; it is being used in factories, automobile, shipyard and construction. Direct exposure to loose asbestos fibers can develop the symptoms of mesothelioma, but the infected cells can remain dormant in the body for a long period of about 15-20 years.
But the worst par of the disease is the fact that this disease generally gets detected in older days i.e. at the age of 50-60 years and also mostly in the last stage. Thereby, reducing the chances of the individual’s recovery. So this is very necessary that people who are likely to take in much asbestos particles should be scanned regularly for any symptoms of mesothelioma.

Government policies have empowered the mesothelioma patients to claim for compensation. They can file lawsuits with the help of their attorneys for claiming such compensation. The mesothelioma victims can sue the company in which he had been employed into, for not being socially rational, but being more inclined towards the flowing profits, and not undertaking any steps to slacken the use of asbestos or using in a more protective way which has resulted in endangering the lives of the employees.

Know Your Heart Health

Friday, October 17th, 2008

We all know that keeping up with our heart health is an important thing to do. We all know that there are a wide variety of factors that cause heart problems, and we should know by now that there are some basic ways to help protect the health of our hearts. What many people do not realize, however, is that keys to their heart health may be different than keys to the heart health of others.

There are almost as many strategies and tips for having good heart health as there are people with hearts in the world. It is important that each person takes the time to learn about his or her own heart health and to learn about the possible methods of ensuring heart health for years to come.

One of the best ways for anyone to become familiar with the needs of their heart is to see a physician. Schedule a visit to see your doctor and plan to discuss your heart health with him or her. If you can think of any questions or concerns you have regarding your heart health, write them down and bring them along. It will also be very helpful if you have a record of your extended family’s heart health history. It is likely that your physician will want to discuss more than just your own heart health. He or she will want to look for patterns or trends that have affected other people you’re related to.

A physician can help you determine not only the current health of your heart, but also give you a better understanding of specific things you can do to help prevent heart attack or heart disease. For some people, the most significant factor in achieving and maintaining heart health is to change their diet. The foods we choose to put into our bodies affect our heart health in more ways than we know. Eating large amounts of sugar, carbohydrates or processed foods will eventually take their toll on our heart health. Your physician can set you up with a dietician who specializes in creating unique diet plans that promote heart health.

For other people, it is their exercise and physical fitness habits that a physician will address. Heart health can be significantly altered based upon a person’s level of exercise. Your physician will be able to help you create a fitness plan that will be effective for you and your heart health needs.

It is never too late to take your heart health seriously. Make an appointment to see your physician today.

Denton Krypps has been consulting people to take their heart health seriously ever since battling back from a nearly fatal heart attack ten years ago. Check out www.hearthealthgroup.info for the sake of your heart.

The South Beach Diet

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Among the most popular forms of dieting is the South Beach diet, developed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston of Miami, Florida.

The South Beach diet is always confused with Atkins Diet, which is a low-carbohydrate diet. The South Beach diet highlights the consumption of “good carbohydrates” (high in fiber) and low in glycemic index. The South Beach diet was developed for patients with heart problems to lose weight without risking ketosis. The weight loss was a side effect which turned out to be beneficial and this encouraged many people to try South Beach diet.

According to the South Beach diet theory, highly processed carbohydrates are quickly digested which makes insulin level to shoot up. Once the carbohydrates are all used up, your high insulin level makes you crave more for carb-filled foods.

The South Beach diet is based on the observation that Americans are carb crazy, which is also the reason for the induction phase. In the first two weeks, dieters attempt to eliminate bad carb such as grains or fruits. After this phase, grain-based foods and fruits are returned to the diet with the concentration on foods with low glycemic index.

The South Beach diet also emphasizes the difference between good and bad carbohydrates, and good and bad fats. Good carbohydrates have low glycemic index which means that they are slowly digested and absorbed. The South Beach diet bans unhealthy fats such as saturated fat.

Finally, the South Beach diet stresses a permanent change in one’s way of eating. The South Beach diet suggests whole grains along with large amounts of vegetables, with sufficient amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, plus Omega-3 oils. The South Beach diet discourages eating of overly refined foods such as flour and sugar.

According to experts, the South Beach diet met the criteria of healthy diet which is a good thing. The bad thing is the induction phase wherein dieters lose weight due to loss of water. Losing a large amount of water can disturb one’s electrolyte so if you’re following the South Beach diet, it would be better if you work closely with a doctor.

According to Dr. Agatston, South Beach diet is neither a low carb nor low fat diet but the restrictions placed in the induction phase cut big time the carbohydrate and fat intake of dieters. The good thing about the South Beach diet is that it teaches people on the right foods to eat to cut the risk of heart problems and high cholesterol as well as help them lose weight. The South Beach diet is a long, tedious journey towards perhaps a drop dead gorgeous body. But more than phases of losing weight, the South Beach diet is a way of life.

Weight Loss - The pH Diet Program

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Whether you’re simply looking to firm-up before summertime or want to lose some serious weight - this plan will produce results for you - if you stick with it that is. Hopefully, you’ll transform from a “diet” mentality to a “lifestyle” mentality. I’m convinced that after seeing the incredible results from this program, you’ll become addicted to the way you look and feel.

I’m not going to promise you pie-in-the-sky results. However, this program will cause you to lose weight quickly and safely. You’ll be properly nourished throughout the entire program… and that’s the reason the weight will come off.

Let me also assure you… this program is not a hard program to follow. You won’t go through periods of hunger. As a matter of fact, you’ll be eating much more frequently than normal - just in smaller portions.

The pH Diet For Weight Loss will turn your body into a furnace… constantly and efficiently burning everything you feed it.

Why Getting Your pH Back In Balance Will Help Shed Pounds

As your body becomes more and more acidic, it becomes less efficient. Acidification negatively impacts your ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. It slows your metabolism down, and taxes every system in your body. Here are a few ways that acidity contributes to weight gain:

Stomach: Acidification is related to mineral deficiency. When you become deficient in a macro mineral called chloride, your ability to digest food in your stomach becomes inhibited. In order to digest food with protein, for example, your body will use chloride in order to make hydrochloric acid (HCL). If you’re deficient in chloride, the HCL that your stomach produces will not be acidic enough (the stomach is the one organ that you want to be very acidic). This leads to improperly digested food, causing the rest of the digestive organs to have to work harder in order to compensate.

Intestines: When food is passed on from the stomach into the small intestines, it’s mixed with bile from the liver, and pancreatic juice from the pancreas. These fluids must be alkaline in order to function properly. If your body lacks the proper mineral balance, it will lead to and acidic environment in the intestines. In this environment, proper digestion does not take place, food ferments, and it putrefies. This environment becomes a breeding ground for all sorts of bad organisms to grow. As these bacteria and yeasts proliferate, they can literally bore holes through intestinal walls, causing leaky gut. Now, all of that pollution starts to create toxicity throughout your entire body. At the same time, the lack of proper digestion leads to poor assimilation of vital nutrients.

Liver: The liver is your primary detoxification organ. As your body becomes more acidic and polluted, you place so much stress on your liver that it simply can’t keep up with the load. This stress in turn leads to more stress on every other body system.

This all helps to contribute to the excessive storage of…FAT.

Fat is a binder of toxins. This is truth is well documented. As a matter of fact, the United States Environmental Protection Agency studied fat biopsies on over 400 individuals; the results were alarming. Every one of them contained toxins (more than 100 different toxins were identified). So, imagine the scenario: Because of an acidic body, microforms grow (bad bacteria, yeasts & fungi), producing all sorts of toxins (mycotoxins and exotoxins). Your liver, which is already overly stressed with it’s every day duties, simply can’t process these toxins. Also, the acidity and lack of minerals needed to process toxins are lacking - so not only is your liver too busy and burdened, it’s not even being supplied with the necessary elements (minerals) in order to do a very effective job.

Your body has a wonderful way of dealing with this problem… store the toxins in your fat! However… because this fat is in essence “saving your life” from toxins, you will have a tough time burning it - even if you went on a crash diet - your body won’t allow it to happen. In addition to this, because your whole body is literally stressed out, your metabolism slows down greatly, causing you to store any extra calories you don’t need as fat. At the end of the day, fat is a toxin problem, and toxins are an acid problem. When you get your entire biochemistry and pH back in order, you’ll see the excess weight literally melt away!

The Program

I will now outline a very practical way to alkalize your body, which will lead to a natural reduction in excess weight. If you stick to the protocol, you’ll see incredible results. I will discuss diet and supplementation in this section.

The purpose of eating the recommended foods is, of course, to get the recommended nutrients. If you are acidic, the types of nutrients that you lack are different than if your pH is balanced. Proper pH balance occurs in your body when there is a proper synergy and abundance of all nutrients. These are the essential nutrients that you’ll derive from the alkaline foods or supplements that will help you to balance your pH and lose weight:

Water: This is the most important element that your body needs. Of course you’ve heard this your whole life, but it’s important that you actually do what you’ve heard. While some “experts” say to drink eight 8 oz. glasses per day, it is my professional opinion that this is only half the amount that you actually need. On top of that, since you want to cleanse your whole system out, I recommend that you drink one liter for every 30 lbs of body weight. So, if you weigh 150 lbs, you need to drink 5 liters of water per day during this program. Not only will it serve to flush acids and toxins out of your body, it will also help to keep your hunger in check.

It’s just as important to consider the quality of the water that you’re drinking as it is the quantity. During this program (and thereafter), you’ll want to drink highly mineralized, alkaline water. This will supply vital trace elements, and act as a buffer to acids in your system. This type of water is also better absorbed by the cells in your body because of its structure. Adding pH Booster drops to water will increase the pH of it by as much as 500 times. It’s a good idea to make a gallon or more at a time, so it’s always readily available when you want it. Also, get in a habit of carrying a bottle of water with you everywhere you go. Besides drinking water, you’ll get water from eating plenty of fresh vegetables.

Alkaline Minerals: These include potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, as well as manganese and iron. Maintaining proper mineral balance is foundational for pH balance. When you have abundant reserves of these minerals, your body will have the buffering capacity to neutralize excess acids in your bodily tissues and fluids.

Trace Minerals: These are the forgotten minerals… numbering 70 plus. They serve very specific “niche” roles in the body. Unfortunately, because of the agricultural trends over the last century, much of the soil that your food is grown in is devoid of these vital trace minerals. This program will help to replenish depleted reserves of these minerals.

Enzymes: Enzymes are the spark-plug of life. Without them, life would not exist. They occur naturally in living foods… those that are not cooked or processed. They are required not only in digestion, but in literally millions of different chemical transactions that occur within your body every day. Acidification is synonymous with enzyme deficiency. Every time you eat a food that is cooked, microwaved, processed or packaged, you’re eating a food that is essentially “dead”. The enzymes that were present in them that are required for digestion and nutrient assimilation are now gone. The constant ingestion of these types of foods severely taxes every organ in your body. This program, which is high in fresh, raw food, will help to replenish these vital proteins in your body.

Even as you begin to use fat stores as a fuel source, you’ll need enzymes (lipase) to bread down the solid fats into fatty acids. This process is what will eventually result in those excess pounds coming off.

Fiber: Fiber plays a critical role in weight management. Studies suggest that people who add an extra 14 grams per day to their diet could expect to lose 4 pounds in a matter of weeks and decrease food intake by as much as 10%. Your current diet probably does not contain enough fiber. The average American consumes 15 grams of fiber daily — 10 grams less than the minimum recommended amount of 25 mg. This program will boost your fiber intake well beyond the daily minimum RDA. This will help the digestive process, as well as give you a “full” feeling… which will cause you to eat less.

The pH Balancing Diet

During this program, your diet will consist primarily of the following raw foods: Vegetables, Nuts, Seeds, Beans, Fresh cold pressed oils, and protein powder. These foods are alkalizing, where as foods like meat, eggs, processed grains, sugar, packaged foods, cooked foods, and most condiments are moderately to extremely acidifying.

The diet is quite simple. Eat at least six times per day, and keep portion sizes small. Some call this type of eating “grazing”. Most of these foods (with the exception of oils) are low in calories. However, calorie count is not the key to this diet… acid count is. By eating these types of alkalizing foods, you’ll introduce nutritional elements that will help to neutralize and purge out excess acids and toxins that are causing your over weight state. You’ll also be refraining from acidifying foods at the same time, so you’ll be giving your body a break at the same time.

A complete list of alkalizing and acidifying foods along with recipes can be found on The Phion Nutrition web site (see below).

Move Your Body

You don’t have to kill yourself in the gym in order to experience the benefits of healthy movement. The key is to move… to breathe and sweat. Get your heart rate up, and your blood circulating. By exercising regularly, you’ll greatly amplify the benefits of this alkalizing diet and supplement program. Not all exercise is the same, though.

It’s much better to keep your heart rate low for longer periods of time, vs. keeping it high for a shorter period of time. As a general rule, you should not have to catch your breath when exercising… if you do, you’re heart rate is too high. This will result in the burning of sugar as your fuel source, vs. the burning of fat (which is what you want). When you burn sugar, it produces lactic acid in your body - which, of course is not a very good thing if you can’t effectively neutralize it.
It’s important to make this program a lifestyle over time. Once you get to your ideal weight, you’re going to want to keep it off…correct? Do the same things that brought you success during this program every day thereafter. The longer you remain in a state of optimal health, and have the body that makes you feel great inside, the more you’ll be likely to keep it up.

One last thing… give yourself a pat on the back. You should be proud of yourself for taking the steps to improve the quality of your health, and the quality of your life. Keep a smile on your face, don’t make this program a “chore” - have fun with it. Nothing - I mean nothing - feels as good as a healthy, vibrant, energetic, and lean body. Nothing feels as good as radiant health! So… go get it.

Treatment For Mesothelioma

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Mesothelioma is a kind of permanent cancer disease. Mesothelioma cancer occurs when tissues of our lungs or abdominal components get affected. In more cases asbestos exposure was identified as the reason for mesothelioma disease. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear immediately after it’s exposure, it takes time between twenty to thirty years. This enables the disease identification process a critical one.

Treatments for mesothelioma depends on the stage of the cancer, the specific part being affected, the total amount of space being affected, how long one have the problem, the look of the cancer cells under microscope and the age factor of the patient. French Women Don’t Get Fat - Book Review

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

French women seem to enjoy breads, desserts, and wine, but then don’t gain the weight. American women, on the other hand, just think about snacking and magically put on ten pounds. In her bestselling book, French Women Don’t Get Fat : The Secret of Eating For Pleasure, Mirelle Guiliano reveals the secrets that French women have at staying healthy and trim.

French Women Don’t Get Fat begins with the account of the author, Mirelle Guiliano, growing up in France. By a stroke of luck she was sent to America in her teenage years as an exchange student. In America, she was introduced to brownies and cookies - which quickly became favorites. In no time at all, Mirelle put on twenty pounds. When it was time to return home she was a little nervous about what her family and friends would think of the "new" Mirelle. The story of seeing her family for the first time after being away is funny and heart wrenching at the same time. I can’t do justice to this story, so I would recommend buying the book and reading it on your own. Later, her mother set up a secret meeting with their family physician, "Dr. Miracle", who helped her to shed the extra pounds, and more importantly, taught her how to live like a French Woman.

This book is not a miracle diet. In fact, French Women Don’t Get Fat isn’t a "diet" book at all. What it does is suggest ways to help you live a balanced, healthier lifestyle. The first thing the book suggests is to take an inventory of what you eat for a couple of weeks. By looking at your food journal, you should be able to see what your "offenders" are - meaning what foods you are overeating. For example, Mirelle’s offenders were sweets. Once you recognize what foods you are eating out of balance, your next step is to identify why you overeat in this category. For example, if your "offender" is bread, you might notice that you are eating a lot of bread when you go to restaurants. You could then decide to only have one slice before your meal comes. The book also discusses changing the way you think. You aren’t skimping on the bread because you are depriving yourself something you love, you are merely saving room for other things. The pleasure of most foods is in the first few bites, as French Women Don’t Get Fat points out. After that we are just eating on autopilot. If you can avoid eating without thinking, you can avoid eating excess food. French women eat with their heads and do not leave the table feeling stuffed or guilty.

Another secret of the French this book points to is drinking more water. We all know that water is good for us, but how many of us really drink as much as we should? The secret is to add water to your daily routine. Drink a glass of water before you eat your breakfast. Once you have established this as part of your routine, then add another glass before going to bed. French Women Don’t Get Fat reminds us that sleeping is a very dehydrating process. When both of these are routine, make it a habit to drink water each time you pass a water fountain. French women drink water all throughout the day.

Once you are drinking more water, you will probably feel healthier than ever. Since water has no calories, no preservatives, and nothing extra added, you might find that you are interested in the ingredients of the other foods you are consuming. Have you ever read the list of ingredients in a frozen dinner? What is all of that stuff? Why are we consuming things we can’t even pronounce? Another key to eating like the French is what the author of this book calls "Ritual Preparation." While she lived at home, Mireille’s mother prepared almost all of the food that she consumed. None of it was filled with preservatives, and most everything was fresh. French Women Don’t Get Fat recommends going to the market several times a week, and selecting the freshest ingredients. By market the book is referring to a farmers market, and not the supermarket. Quality ingredients equal quality food. When you are eating quality, you won’t need the quantity to make up for the lack of taste. Also, set the table like you would find at a restaurant - real napkins even. The extra attention to details will help you remember to savor your food. Also, sit down as a family, and turn off the television. Make meal time a ritual.

According to this book, you also need to move like a French woman. We aren’t talking about hours of grueling exercise at the gym. What we are talking about is adding more movement to your daily routine. Walk to work, or if you work too far, then get off the train one stop early and walk the rest of the way to work. Or, add in a daily walk before eating breakfast. Take the stairs instead of the elevator when possible. French Women Don’t Get Fat advised to not avoid precious steps: think of ways to add in more movement to your daily routine.

This book also includes recipes for foods such as Grilled Spring Lamb Shops, Asparagus Flan, Cauliflower Gratin, Grilled Chicken with Rosemary, Egg Omelet with Mixed Herbs and Ricotta Cheese, among many others. Since the French enjoy bread so much, recipes for Baguettes and Croissants are included too. The book has menu ideas as well.

If you need a good book to inspire you to lose a little weight so that you feel good about yourself, then French Women Don’t Get Fat is where you should turn. Because the focus of this book is not about depriving yourself of good things, but about making focused choices to help you accomplish something even better, you will be motivated to change a few of your bad habits into good habits - and therefore live a more fulfilled and slimmer life.
